Definition of Terms

Listed below are some of the terms used in visas, applications and procedures.

Alien: is a term used for a foreigner or a national who is not a Filipino citizen.

Dual Citizenship: is a status of an individual who is a citizen of two countries. A person does not normally lose his citizenship if he becomes a citizen of another country. However, if a person is becoming a citizen of a country that does not allow dual citizenship, he may be required by that country to give up his Filipino citizenship. And, if a person becomes a citizen of another country, which does not allow dual citizenship, the authorities of the former country of citizenship may either regard him as having lost his citizenship or may refuse to recognise his new citizenship.

Jus Sanguinis: is a Latin word which means Right of blood. It is a principle of which an individual acquires the nationality of his/her natural parent/s at birth.

Jus Soli:  is a Latin word which means Right of Soil or Right of Territory. It is a principle that a person's nationality at birth is determined by the place of birth (e.g. the territory of a given state).

Non-Restricted National:  is a term used for a foreigner whose country has international relationship or has signed a treaty with the Philippine government on bilateral basis.

Philippine Visa: a Philippine visa is an endorsement made on a travel document or passport by a consular officer at the Philippine Embassy or Consulate stating that the application was thoroughly examined and that the bearer is allowed to enter the country. However, a Philippine visa does not fully allow the bearer to enter the country it will still depend on the discretion of the Immigration Officer on duty.

Pre-Arranged Employee-Commercial Visa: This visa is issued to foreigners who are legally employed and are receiving monetary or any form of compensation.

Pre-Arranged Employee-Missionary Visa: This visa is issued to foreigners who are engaged in religious occupation.Restricted National: is a term used for a foreigner whose country does not have international relationship or business with the Philippine government.

Special Resident Retiree Visa (SRRV): is a visa given to a foreigner and a former Filipino retiree who want to permanently retire or reside in the Philippines.

Treaty Investor: is a foreigner who enters Philippines to develop and or direct the operations of a foreign company of which (a) he built (b) he is in the process of establishing or, (c) he and his foreign employer are of the same nationality.

Treaty Trader: is a foreigner who enters Philippines solely to engage in trade or commerce in accordance with the existing treaty of commerce between his country and the Philippines.
